Hispanic Americans in the Labor Market: Patterns over Time and across Generations

This article reviews evidence on the labor market performance of Hispanics in United States, with a particular focus US-born segment this population. After discussing critical issues that arise US data sources commonly used to study Hispanics, we document how currently compare other Americans terms education, earnings, and supply, then discuss long-term trends these outcomes. Relative non-Hispanic Whites, from most national origin groups possess sizeable deficits which large part reflect corresponding educational deficits. Over time, rates high school completion by have almost converged those but Hispanic college instead widened. Finally, perspective immigrant generations, experience substantial improvements education earnings between first-generation immigrants second-generation consisting children immigrants. Continued progress beyond second generation is obscured measurement arising intermarriage fact later-generation descendants often do not self-identify as when they come families mixed ethnic origins.
